So, what is this perfect home based business? Explain it to me…
It’s actually very simple. Let’s say you or your child needs braces. The first thing the dentist or orthodontist does is take a set of x-rays and other records in order to provide a diagnosis and explain the treatment plan. Part of that set of records are impressions (molds) of the patient’s upper and lower teeth.

The orthodontist fills a tray with “goop” and presses it onto the patients teeth. After the goop hardens, she removes the tray. The result is a perfect “mold” of the patient’s teeth and gums. This is the impression. The orthodontist takes two impressions, an upper and a lower.

The doctor (hint: always address your dentists and orthodontists as “doctor”) sends these impressions to me in the mail and I use them to make a set of plaster study models that I send back. These models are an exact replica of the patient’s teeth and surrounding oral tissues. After the treatment is finished the doctor may send another set of impressions from the same patient so he will have a “before” and “after” set of study models.

At the end of the month, I bill all of my doctors and they send me checks for my work.

Don’t worry, you don’t have to make all those teeth – the impressions do that part for you. All you do is trim the plaster and pretty them up a bit. Study models are so easy to make. I’ll show you how.

No selling.
Now comes the good part. If the doctor likes the quality of your study models, he or she will send you jobs (called “cases” in the business) on a regular basis. You don’t have to do any selling. One of my accounts sends me over 600 cases a year (I have about 14 active accounts at the time of this writing).

In fact, I have accounts that I’ve never even spoken with. I got an email inquiry from them, I sent them my info, and they’ve been sending me work for years.

How much money can you make?

It is possible to make over $100,000 a year making study models by yourself in your own home. I’ll show you how in a second. But first I want to be completely honest and realistic with you.

If you are looking for a get rich quick scheme – this isn’t it. If you want to make money without actually working, you should stop reading now. This is an actual job which requires actual work to make actual money. Yes, it’s fun and creative, you can make your own hours, and you get to work from home – but it is work.

The job below took me about a day and a half. Note my old, much lower prices…

Let’s do the math.
One of the biggest labs in the country (Great Lakes Orthodontics) charges $62.35 per study model at the time of this writing. I charge a little less than them even though my quality is higher. We’ll use my pricing, $59 in this example.

I can make one study model in about 40 minutes. (It will take you longer at first, but with practice you will get faster and faster.) So I can make 12 models in an eight hour day.

$59 x 12 models = $708 per day.

x 5 days per week = $3540 per week

x 4.3 weeks per month = $15,222 per month

x 11 months per year (how does a one month vacation sound?) = $167,442 a year.

BUT: It’s almost impossible to max out your production schedule every working day. Also, you need time for paperwork, packing and shipping, cleaning, etc. So – although it is mathematically possible, you probably won’t make $167,000 a year all by yourself. I never have.

To be honest with you, I just don’t want to put in a lot of hours. I enjoy my free time too much. In fact I’m kind of embarrassed to admit this but I usually work less than 30 hours a week – and I’m really happy with the amount of money I make.

Sometimes you may have to put in a little overtime like I did on this day…

I got behind and had to do 15 models in one day. It took 10 hours but the pay (just under $900) was worth it.

As in any business, it’s impossible to guarantee what you will earn because it depends on so many factors, not the least of which is how much effort you put into it. But I think you can see from the numbers above that owning your own in home study model business has wonderful income potential. It’s really all up to you.

Growing your business
If you want to hire people or partner with friends to grow your business, then the sky is the limit. However, I recommend you start out by yourself and get comfortable with making the study models. When you are ready to grow, simply let your new employee use your Modelworks Training System to train themselves. When they have demonstrated that they know what to do, you can put them to work.
